Similitude
Trip's Quarters
Here the dialogue was changed before it was filmed. We gain additional insights into what was going on in Sim-Trip's mind, but we don't get the intense "I need Trip! Trip!" outburst by Jon which we saw in the aired version. This is a case where we prefer the version which was filmed because of its strong emphasis on Jon's need for Trip, enhanced by Scott Bakula's very emotional performance. See what you think!
SIMILITUDE
ACT FOUR (continued)
INT. TRIP'S QUARTERS
Sim-Trip is at his desk, working on a PADD filled with
medical data. The door CHIMES.
SIM-TRIP
Come in.
The door slides open and Archer ENTERS. He looks around.
ARCHER
How long have you been staying in
Trip's quarters?
SIM-TRIP
I was on the way to my room last
night...but I found myself coming
here instead.
ARCHER
I'm not sure how Trip would feel
about it.
SIM-TRIP
I wouldn't have a problem.
OFF Archer's look...
SIM-TRIP
I have his memories...I have his
feelings...I have his body...how
am I not Trip?
ARCHER
You're not the man lying in
Sickbay.
SIM-TRIP
No, I'm the man you've condemned
to death.
Archer takes this in a beat...remains firm.
ARCHER
Aren't you condemning Trip to
death?
SIM-TRIP
I didn't put him in a coma.
ARCHER
You can save his life.
SIM-TRIP
In a way, I will be...by saving
my own...
ARCHER
Phlox says there's almost no chance
that the enzyme will work...
SIM-TRIP
When your life is at stake...any
chance at all is one worth taking.
ARCHER
But at what cost? It'll take a
day to synthesize the enzyme...by
that time, your neural tissue will
no longer be compatible with
Trip's. He'll die.
SIM-TRIP
I know.
ARCHER
I can't let that happen.
SIM-TRIP
Are you saying you'll operate on
me by force?
ARCHER
If you truly have all of Trip's
memories...you know the answer to
that question.
(beat)
I don't have to tell you what's at
stake...I must complete this
mission...and to do that I need
Trip. I'll take whatever steps
necessary to bring him back.
SIM-TRIP
Even if it means killing me.
ARCHER
(without flinching)
Even if it means killing you.
Hearing Archer say it stops Sim-Trip cold.
SIM-TRIP
Tell me something, when you
decided to bring me into the
world...did you even hesitate?
Did you even stop to think what it
would be like to live out an
entire life in fifteen days? To
be haunted by memories that belong
to someone else? To have intense
feelings for people you have no
right to love?
ARCHER
I can't pretend to know what
you're going through.
SIM-TRIP
Then how can you take my life?
A long beat.
ARCHER
Because I have no choice.
Archer turns and leaves the room.
